Mr. 3 Cent$ – The Circle of Influence

Quote: “Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. They work on the things they can do something about.” – Stephen Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

Dear World,

In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey reveals a lot of insight into changing the course of your life and adapting a winning mindset. One of the illustrations that stood out to me was the comparison of the proactive focus and reactive focus. He uses concepts to distinguish between things that you can’t directly control such as your circumstances or other people’s behavior (Circle of Concern) and things that you can actually do something about (Circle of Influence). When you focus your thoughts and energy on the Circle of Influence, the nature of the energy is positive and magnifying, it causes the Circle of Influence to grow. There are more things you can do to change your reality. So many times opportunities come in the form of setbacks, disappointments, failures; but the only thing that separates them from being opportunities is how you view them. When solutions become your first response to problems, you’ll realize opportunities approach you everyday! On the contrary, when you focus on the Circle of Concern, things like the weaknesses of other people around you and problems in your environment you can’t change, you cause your Circle of Influence to reduce. Yes, you’ll never see what you can do to effectively change your situation if you never train your mind to do it! I want to encourage you to focus on what you can do. Ask yourself questions like, “What am I doing to add to my situation? What more could I be doing in my role to benefit the team? What can I do right at this moment to change this?” Avoid blaming others or your environment around you, no matter how true it may be. Why? Because the more you do, the less you can do about it.

Sincerely,

Mr. 3 Cent$

Mr. 3 Cent$ – No Better Time (Late Night Edition)

Fun Fact: Dolphins literally fall half asleep. Each side of their brains take turns so they can come up for air!

Dear World,

In this late night edition, I want to encourage you to wind down wisely, as if sleep has 6 stages! I call it the foreplay stage. When you begin to wind down but aren’t drifting into sleep yet, start to fill your mind with thoughts of your ideal future, ways to improve tomorrow by taking action, or cuddle up with your partner and strengthen your connection. Whatever you do, just don’t go to sleep carrying the burden of the day that passed. It’ll only follow you into the next day. Instead, get a head start on tomorrow, tonight, and visualize your success, you deserve it!

Sincerely,

Mr. 3 Cent$

Mr. 3 Cent$ – Environment is Everything!

Quote: “In Boston they expect a championship….you go into our gym everyday and they don’t put up eastern conference banners, they put up all the championship banners. That’s the level of expectation around the whole city.” – Paul Pierce (on the Boston Celtics)

Dear World,

Environment is everything! I decided to watch some Eric Thomas for a little extra dose of motivation one night and stumbled across a real gem. Many of us forget or haven’t been trained to understand how important a winning environment is to our success. It takes good soil for a plant to grow, a strong pack to raise a wolf, and a powerful pride to raise the king of the jungle—environment matters. To help understand how to create that environment, ET touches on two points: expectation and exposure. In other words, “What are you exposed to and what is being expected of you?” This is a great way to determine if you are in a winning environment. Do you like what you’re being exposed to? Is what you’re looking at, hearing, or experiencing helping you reach the goals that you’ve set for yourself? Your conscious mind can’t focus on everything so all the rest of the images, sounds, and other information you take in, where do you think its going? Be mindful of what you’re exposing yourself to. The next question, “What is being expected of you?”, is such a big one I believe because this is the one most often neglect, including myself for a very long time. ET gives the Boston example and I love this so much. In a Paul Pierce interview, he was asked what the expectation was in Boston and Pierce replies by saying they don’t even hang up eastern conference banners in their arena, only final championships! If you don’t go all the way, you didn’t win at all. The environment in Boston is such a winning one because they don’t accept anything else, and if you go up the street, there’s the New England Patriots, Harvard, and more. Chances are, I don’t need to explain to you what those are because you already know—environment is everything. The people around you have to expect winning for you and themselves. But first, it starts with you. Start pushing forward to your mark and those around you will learn to expect greatness from you and when you’ve displayed that you want it for yourself, the right people and opportunities will align. So, remember to ask yourself those two questions and if you don’t like the answers, please change them, because your environment matters.
