1. When did you realize you were interested in art?
I’ve always been generally interested in art. I was a drummer before all the photography and i’ve travelled all over the U.S. I grew up in the music scene and shortly everyone around me was an artist of some sort. I was in boys choir in middle school, double magnet at arts school for high school and then I transferred to another school and finished in theater. I’ve worked odd jobs all throughout my late teens until about now and i’ve come to understand regular-shit-day-jobs just isn’t my thing.

Mike Boyd 22. What Influences you and where do you get your inspiration?
A number of people “influence” me. I try to take a little bit of something that I saw, that I liked, and try to flip it to fit my cannon of getting things done. I took an art history 101 class and was instantly like, shit, this ancient knowledge has some actual practicality to it. So i try to gather as much as i can from there and then branch out. As far as inspiration, anything can help me develop an idea into something tangible because similarly to how I am influenced I also gather inspiration. A little here, a little there, and I’m good.

5. What differentiates you from different artist?
I just don’t want to make money I want to be great. So I don’t mind taking time to become perfect, enduring the losses, the failures and sacrifice to reap the blessings when all is said and done.

6. What impact do you wish to leave with your art?
I just want people to go see it in a museum. I want people to get that feeling I get when I see something, a one of a kind, hanging on a wall. To connect briefly artist to person and hopefully inspire them to do some dope shit.

1. When did you realize you were interested in art?
During our family vacations we would always go to a museum that highlighted the art and culture of where we were visiting. That was always my favorite part of our trips. It then carried into how I would express myself, and I would almost always choose art.

2. What Influences you and where do you get your inspiration?
Mommy made me read the biographies of almost every black athlete, musician, activist, and artist as a child. So a lot of what inspires me to create comes from the artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. I’m a delivery driver for Papa John’s and I use that driving time to think and listen to music and a lot of ideas come to me during that time. I won’t be a papa john’s driver forever so, any space where I can reflect and have a good time by myself is when/where I get my inspiration.

3. Who are your top 5 favorite artists?
Writer: Maya Angelou. She’s very conversational in her writing and even though I never met her, when I read her books I feel like I’m sitting in her living room visiting her or something. I just love her. You have to beg me to write though.
Actor: Kerry Washington. I’ve spent a lot of time watching and re-watching her entire anthology and she’s very much a chameleon. The amount of research she does to transform herself into her roles is the level of dedication Beyonce gives to her performances. She breaks my heart in each of her roles. She makes me forget the other roles she has played. When she is in a role, she is in it all the way. I just love her.
Musician: Esperanza Spalding. I’ve seen her 6 times in 2012 and I regret not seeing her more than that. She’s an exceptional bass player and lead vocalist. No two performances are alike. She’s a complete different experience every time she plays. I cried the 2nd time I saw her. I just love her.
Musician: Anita Baker. I can’t explain this one. I feel like our souls are connected. I attend a concert a month and if I ever got to see Anita, I’d quit going to concerts forever. She’s it for me. I just love her.
God: I mean, have you seen earth? I just love Him.

4. If you could work with anyone dead or alive who would it be?
Nicki Minaj. I think it would be fun to do a writing session with her. Coming up with the most clever way to describe being a boss ass bitch. Plus, she makes me laugh. I feel like we’d be great friends and have a lot of fun together.

5. What differentiates you from different artist?
I’m not sure. But I take care of myself in such a way that I allow myself time to procrastinate while still having enough time to execute my vision. I don’t force myself to come up with something on the spot. I want to think about stuff for a few days.

6. What impact do you wish to leave with your art?
I’m striving to become a tv/film director. I want to make people laugh, cry, and most importantly, think. I want to make my actors feel safe to go places they haven’t gone before in their art. I want my crew to feel safe to try things they’ve never done before with their art. I guess, I want to be a facillitator of sorts. I facillitate your expression of art. And I hope what I accomplish will leave an impression on generations to come.

Farewell to Fall

Fall is my favorite season. The weather, the vibes, and most importantly the beautifully intense warm colors. This particular fall season has been a breathtakingly beautiful one. Our warm days are officially limited and we advise you to enjoy every last one of them. This photo gallery is a tribute to fall; an official farewell until 2016.
